SUNBOLT is intent on fostering a space for all BAEKCHEN writers, readers, and artists. While the BaekChen pairing has had its fair share of pairing-centric fests, all of them have since retired; we appreciate the delight and fun they spread while they were active, and hope to pick up right where they left off.SUNBOLT ran a successful first round SPRING'24 through FALL'24. We hope to enjoy a similar timeline for this next round...For more information, please visit the linked pages below!

SUNBOLT has just a few rules and guidelines that we expect you to follow in order to participate in the fest. Please familiarize yourself with these:

RULES

  1. SUNBOLT is for BAEKCHEN pairings! While fanworks including OT3's, OT4's, and OT+ are welcomed in SUNBOLT, we do require BaekChen to have focal roles in your work—they cannot be mere side-characters.

  2. We ask that all participants be 18+ because we expect to host mature fanworks; it is to the mod's and writers' comfort for minors not to interact.

  3. Fanworks may not include the following banned topics: graphic non-con, pedophilia, and any depiction of bestiality*.

  4. SUNBOLT requires writers to tag any commonly triggering content and will screen works prior to posting to ensure this rule is followed. Additionally, because we are lax in our content restrictions, we require that archive warnings be used to their full extent (even if they "spoil" an aspect of the story). This is a courtesy to our readers, but nuance is possible! Feel free to ask the mods privately about your specific situation.

  5. Plagiarism is not tolerated. This includes AI-generated fanwork, which is made possible by data-scraping software—many of which "learn" from existing fanworks without permission. Infractions will result in a fanwork's removal from the fest, and a permanent participation ban.

*Bestiality is described in this case to be sexual intercourse with a “feral” form—be that a sentient creature, such as a werewolf, or a non-sentient creature. Nuance is possible, regarding appendages such as tentacles, or “knots”—simply ask the mods through the fest account about your particular case!

GUIDELINES

  1. There is no minimum or maximum word-count restriction for submissions (within reason). Artists may submit sketches or polished pieces. Meta may also be submitted, providing it is posted as a work on AO3.

  2. There is a five fanwork submission restriction per round, but please contact the mods if you find that number limiting. We'd be loathe to turn away your fanwork, and can try figure out a way to include your pieces (possibly with doubling up on your posting days, etc.)

  3. Writing submissions, and AO3 hosted "meta" will be anonymously posted during the fest's promotion period. This is to be fair to both the newest writers among us and the most established. We ask that you not share the details of what you're working on publicly until reveals, but who are we to stop a cheeky #WIP_Wednesday post!

  4. Works should generally be posted in-full, and should generally be standalone. Due to the nature of other mediums, such as twt-fic, we're happy to quote the beginning of your twt-fic during the promotion period, but won't promote that twt-fic's updates moving forward (in fairness for AO3-hosted works only having one promotion post). As far as the standalone requirement, submitted works may be companions to already posted works of yours, but cannot be linked to that work until reveals (whether through your author's note, or the AO3 linked work functionality).

  5. SUNBOLT will correspond with participants through email, using X (formerly Twitter) as a secondary form of contact—we recommend following the account, since X's messaging guidelines have changed frequently since its change in leadership.

  6. For scheduled posting, the fest runs in KST. However, for deadlines—so long as it is the deadline date anywhere in the world, you're still on time!

  7. There are no penalties for dropping out, or even ghosting us before submissions. If the timeline for the first round doesn't work out for you, we get it. We don't want you to be afraid to give another round a shot because you think you left a poor impression—we're very forgiving. That said, it is always appreciated to have you communicate your dropping out, rather than ghost!

SUNBOLT is best described as laidback, relaxed, and easy-going. We understand that everyone’s creative process looks different, and that life has us all on a variety of different roads.

STRUCTURE

SUNBOLT is structured around an seven month period, which we understand may seem very long-winded and daunting. We chose this length in order to create a more relaxed creation period—one that is forgiving of the challenges life sometimes throws our way.In addition to having a longer writing period than many fests, we operate without a traditional prompting period and utilizing lazy check-ins. See details on those below:

Non-traditional prompting! SUNBOLT gets straight to the point, which means we skip the month of prompting and jump straight into writing. That said, we will be hosting a prompt archive on AO3 that people can send prompts to! These "prompts" are bare-bones and not required for anyone to participate in the fest.Lazy check-ins! SUNBOLT knows from past experience that the more intensive the check-in, the less likely it's answered! We'll operate check-ins with a simple google-form that you'll say 'yes!' or 'no :(' to a question about whether or not you're still participating!

  • What about the sign-up period? If I miss it, do I have to wait until next year? SUNBOLT utilizes an open sign-up period—largely because we do not require a "prompt archive" as is common with traditional fests. We set a sign-up deadline shortly before submissions are due, but latecomers are always welcome to contact the fest account and see if there are options available for them. Again, we would rather figure out a way to make things work than turn away someone trying to join us in the BaekChen fun!

  • How hands' off are the mods going to be? Seven months is a long time, and I worry without frequent check-ups, I may not stay motivated? We get it! The mods have no plans to be frequently contacting our participants (in the sense that we won't be spamming), but we'd like to send out a message now and again offering support to our participants as the fest chugs along, and have intent to host writing sprints or other little events!

  • I came across the fest very late, is it possible to extend the posting period to accommodate me? Sometimes! If you catch us early enough and we're lucky enough to have a good spread of fanworks, we can fiddle with the posting schedule and try to net you some time. Unfortunately, if you catch us too late, we may not be able to do that. The good news is that, following SUNBOLT's active "fest" period, we'll continue to update the account. If you want us to promote that BaekChen fic you posted in our off-season, just let us know! You can think of SUNBOLT as your #1 BaekChen promoter! We’re happy to rave about the newest additions to the AO3 tag, and the classics from back in the LJ-era of ficdom, in addition to being a reason for people to publish new works in the tag.
